Depending on the diameter of the needle, appropriate hand sewing thread is also suitable.

E.g. the needle in size 5 fits perfectly with thread thickness 0.6 mm; size 1 with thread thickness 0.8 mm; size 4/0 suitable for thread thickness 1.2 mm.
